We usually think of chess as something like “a board game of strategic skill for two players, played on a chequered board on which each playing piece is moved according to precise rules”.
ThOR doesn’t think of chess like this and so we add a very special difference to our sets. We realise that chess is actually about two armies facing each other across the field of battle in a desperate contest driven by resources, land, politics, religion and a myriad of other causes represented by the King on the board.
So, rather than the usual flat black and white boards, our boards bring the realism of battlefield terrain to the chessboard, with rivers, islands, deserts, roads, etc. delineating the strategic obstacles.
To match these boards ThOR makes hand cast and painted chess pieces in realistic colours.
Some of the sets made so far are based the Battles of Waterloo and Trafalgar, The Lord of the Rings. World War 2, Vikings and Celtic Elves as well as Chinese chess with an Imperial Cities theme.
